Deeply impressed as I was with Pinol's first book 'Cold skin' I started reading his new book with quite a bit of expectation. The story is told by the writer Tommy Thomson who is asked to write down the story of Marcus Garvey, in prison accused of murdering his masters in the heart of Congo.

This book starts out as a story about a ghost-writer's ghost-writer. It then becomes a documentation of a crime, interwoven with the documentation of a literary work-in-progress.

I read this as a very cleverly layered commentary on the literature of imperial/colonial exploitation. On the surface it reads like ripping yarn which is why a lot of reviewers here cite Edgar Rice Burroughs.
